Serving Customers for a Lifetime
When J.A. Burgum began managing the Arthur Farmers Elevator in 1911, his patrons delivered their grain by horse and wagon. Harvesting a cash crop of wheat on a 160-acre homestead took weeks. Today, that same land is harvested in hours.
While changes in agriculture have been staggering, we continue to manage our family businesses with the same pioneering innovation and responsiveness to customer needs that were hallmarks of J.A. and Jessamine Burgum. Their strong management stabilized the struggling elevator. They brought light to Arthur, ND by installing an electric generating plant at the elevator.
Successive generations helped farmers endure the Depression by offering credit and sharecropping arrangements. We built North Dakota’s first retail bulk fertilizer business and the state’s first anhydrous plant. In the 1970s, we helped establish the sunflower industry in North Dakota, now the state with the highest sunflower acreage in the nation. Adding to these milestones, we have completed two 110-car grain loading facilities.
Our family businesses are collectively called The Arthur Companies and include grain elevators, farms, a bird seed company, and a wholesale fertilizer company. Beyond these diverse agribusinesses, our family members are active in banking, research and development, and venture capital opportunities.
Farmers have a well-earned reputation for recognizing true value when they receive it. As our businesses have broadened over the decades to national and international markets, we find this desire for honest, fair business dealings a universal goal.
Perhaps no other attribute has been more important to the success of the family businesses than our commitment to providing solid, quality products and services from our end of the business relationship. And while some businesses treat their customers like there is no tomorrow, we’ll treat you with the same character that will be in favor for generations to come.
